I didn't see anything in the press releases about Selinsgrove having fireworks for the Middleswarth Chips firecracker 30 this weekend. Does anyone know if there is going to be a fireworks display or not. If not, why? Scott?

I would say not. Because they need a permit and different insurance coverage if I remember correctly just like last year. So no. It sucks but I guess thats the way the town wants it.

not the town (selinsgrove) but penn township, where the speedway sits, has an ordinance that requires a permit for fireworks. part of the permit process is the purchase of a bond in case of a lawsuit, even though the fireworks company, promoter and land owner have insurance. the bond that is required costs $3000. only 3 entities in the twsp used to shoot off fireworks on a yearly basis. Selinsgrove Center, Grayson View Assisted Living and the speedway. i believe the selinsgrove center still does but my guess is that as a state agency they are exempt from the permit. if not i think it's rediculous that my tax dollars go towards fireworks.
on kind of the same note, the township maybe 10 years ago or more instituted an amusement tax. only two entities ever had to pay it. the speedway and the bowling alley. the bowling alley about 5 years ago found a loophole that got them out of paying. lawyers have not been able to find a loophole that gets the track out of paying it. your general admission to the speedway is actually just a little over $9.00 the rest is the 6% state tax and the penn township amusement tax.
the township sure makes it rough on the speedway with their demands even though they are the only ones putting extra money into the twsps coffers.

sponsorship of a race does not mean that the sponsor is paying for the entire purse or the increase in the purse.
management decides what the payout for each division is going to be each week. they then set out to find a sponsor to help pay that purse. nightly sponsorship money is not added to the purse it is used to offset what the track pays out.
for example the weekly 358 payout is $9020 plus tow money. for all 4 divisions the payout is over $19,000. Most nightly sponsorships go for $1000. so the speedway still needs to come up with $18,000 each week.
this weekend the sprint payout goes up about $2000.
i do not know the details of the middleswarth sponsorship but you can figure that $1000 of it is sponsorship of the normal purse and anything over $1000, if there is any, is sponsorship towards the increase.
the rest comes from an increase in admission. crowd size has been visibly down this year so the amount the fans pay for the increase in purse is divided by a smaller sample than previous years. i believe last year this weekend was $12 for adults and $9 for students.
right?, wrong?, indifferent?, don't know but that's the way it works.
btw, this info is available on the speedway's website for verification. they are one of the few if not only local track that post's their payout and sponsorship costs.
