Dale Schweikart tops World Products Empire State Series event for IMCA Modifieds
Th Skyline Raceway wrapped up their big Memorial Day Holiday weekend on Suday afternoon with a big racing card that featured the annual appearance of the World Products Empire State Series for the IMCA Modifieds. A new face graced victory lane as Keystone State standout Dale Schweikart drove to victory in his first ever Skyline Raceway appearance. Kevin Jordan won his second feature of the weekend, topping the 30 lap Sportsman feature for his third win of the season. Lou Gordonier ended a 1 year victory lane drought at Skyline with his win in the Street Stock feature while Grayson Albanese scored his first Junkyard Dogs feature win with Matt Johnson also sweeping the weekend with his Empire Sport Trucks win. Bobby Wagner won his third Junkyard Pups feature of the 2012 campaign.
With a full field of 24 of the best IMCA Modified teams in the Northeast set to do battle in their 25 lap World Products Empire State Series event, Mark Griffin and Brian VanTassell paced the field to the green flag with Griffin grabbing the early lead over eventual winner Schweikart, who made a nice move at the drop of the green flag to advance from his fourth starting position to run second behind Griffin. A pair of early caution flags for minor incidents kept the field bunched up with Griffin leading but under heavy pressure from Schweikart. Griffin was running the high side of the speedway with Schweikart holding the low groove as the two veteran drivers raced several laps side by side iin the middle stages of the event.
The wining pass would come just past the halfway point as Schweikart was finally able to clear Griffin and establish himself as the race leader. With Schweikart out front, Griffin bagan to slip back into the pack with Matt Roberts able to slip past Griffin and into the runner-up position. Over the closing laps, Roberts was able to close the gap to pull onto Schweikart’s rear bumper, but was never able to find a way past and settled for a strong second place result. Eddie Sites finished third with Rich McNeal the highest finishing regular in fourth. Griffin hung on to finish fifth. Positions six through ten were filled by John Wilbur, Brian VanTassell, Dan Searls, Sonny Terry, and Kevan Cook.
